Q: How often do I need to replace my furnace filters?

A: Standard filter should be replaced once a month during heating or cooling season.

Q: How long should a furnace or air conditioning unit last?

A: At least 20 years.

A: Replacement typically takes one to two days.

Q: What is a service agreement?

A: An agreement based on yearly maintenance on HVAC equipment. Service agreement typically gives you discounted rates on emergency service calls also.

Q: What is Geo Thermal?

A:  Geothermal heating and cooling is the process of capturing solar energy stored just below the earths' surface.  The stored energy is removed from the earth to heat your home during the winter and heat is removed from your home and deposited back into the earth during the cooling season.  The earth is now being used as a heat exchanger to keep your home at a constant comfortable temperature your around.

Q: What is an open loop system?

A:  A system that can be installed with a supply of well water and proper discharge area such as a river, drainage ditch, stream, pond or lake.  **Check for local restrictions before selecting a specific discharge method.

Q: How much groundwater does an open loop system need?

A: This system can be installed if an abundant supply of high quality well water is available.

Q: What is a closed loop system?

A:  Two types of closed loop systems.  Vertical and Horizontal loop systems.  Vertical is used when land is limited and in retrofit applications of existing homes.  This requires drilling hole at a depth of 150 to 200 feet. Where U-shaped coils of pipe are inserted into the holes   Horizontal is used when there is adequate land area available.  This requires the use of excavation equipment to dig trenches of approx. 6 to 8 feet deep and length of 100 to 300 feet.  Closed loop systems are all self contained. 

Q: What are the benefits of having a tank-less water heater?

A: Not having to store heated water.

Q: If my furnace is oversized for my home will it cost more to operate?

A: Yes, You will also have noticeable temperature changes.

Q: How do I know what size furnace is right for my home?

Q: What is a SEER rating and how does it impact my energy cost?

A: Seasonal Energy Efficiency Rating:  Performance standards that have been developed by the US Government and equipment manufacturers to produces an energy consumption rating that is easy to understand by consumers.

Q: What is Hybrid Heating?

A: Dual fuel systems that delivers exceptional performance by using a heating source that provides its most energy efficient comfort during moderate heating conditions.  As the temperature drops outside, the system automatically switches to your second hearting source when that becomes the most economical way to keep your family comfortable

Q: What does it mean when a faucet is said to have 8-inch centers?

A: The faucet mounts with the fixture holes set 8 inches apart. It’s important that you buy the right size faucet to fit your sink.
 

Q: My showerhead has a buildup of a white substance around the spout. What should I do about that?

A: The white substance is actually deposits. To remove the mineral deposits from the showerhead, pour a cup of vinegar into a plastic bag and then place the bag over the showerhead fixture and leave it in place overnight. The next day, remove the bag and use an old toothbrush to scrub off the deposits.

Q: What is plumber’s putty?

A: It is a sealing putty used for a variety of tasks including to seal basket strainers, garbage disposal rims and tub drains.

Q: What is the difference between PVC and CPVC plastic pipe?

A: CPVC can be used on hot and cold lines, while PVC is for cold water only. PVC is usually used as a drain pipe.

Q: What is the purpose of a pressure relief valve on a water heater?

A: This is a safety device that will open in case of to high of a pressure or temperature rise.

Q: My sump pump runs constantly. Do I need to buy a new one?

A: It could just be a bad switch that is easy to replace.

Q: What do the letters “K,” “L” and “M” on copper tubing mean?

A: Type K is the heaviest. Type L is medium weight and used most often for water lines in homes. Type M is thinner and is used underground or for light domestic water lines if local codes allow.

Q: Is a trap necessary under the sink?

A: You need a trap to shut off odor (sewer gas) from coming into the kitchen and bath area.

Q: In the long run, which is better—chrome drain parts or plastic?

A: Plastic will usually last much longer than chrome, but you have to be careful because it can be affected by some harsh chemicals in drain cleaners.
